"My love of nature, the North Woods, and wildlife is evident in my paintings. When not “up north” in mind or body, I spend much of my time painting “en plein air” around Northern Illinois and organizing painting sites for our weekly group, the Eagle’s Nest Plein Air Painters. I also help organize the annual RRVPG plein air contest and workshops sponsored by the Rock River Valley Painters Guild.

A talented 4th grade classmate inspired me to begin painting and take a children’s workshop at Burpee Art Museum in Rockford. I then continued on to study fine arts at Northern Illinois University. My working years were spent in advertising, industrial publications, industrial paint color analysis, retail art supplies, typesetting, editing, desktop publishing, illustration, and photography. Since retiring as a graphics specialist, I have become an avid plein air painter and participate in classes and local workshops when available including Sharon Fannin, Suzanne Shedosky, Carol Ubben, Dan Letourneau, Stuart Roddy, Tom Linden, David Becker, Dale Popovich, Mary Salstrom, Beverly Garcia, Farley Lewis, Tom Nachreiner, Carol Bingham, and Steve Puttrich.

My oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings have won several awards at Dixon’s Phidian Art Show and The Next Picture Show. They are frequently displayed at the Coliseum Museum of Art, Antiques & Americana (CMAAA) in Oregon IL, Eagle’s Nest Art Gallery at Conover Square in Oregon IL, The Next Picture Show gallery in Dixon IL, the permanent collection of the Byron Museum of History, and local businesses. Some of my paintings have found homes in collections from Illinois, Wisconsin, Washington, Colorado, Florida, and the East coast. You may spot me out painting with my artist friends at local parks, farms, gardens, historic sites, nurseries, and local events. Stop and say "hi" if you see our group. We love visitors and are always looking for new sites to paint."

“ I have always been fascinated by the relationship between musical sounds and light. Even as a child, when I would shut my eyes and listen to music, I would visualize colors and dancing shapes.

In 1940 Walt Disney released the film "Fantasia" and when I saw it, I was amazed that others saw similar colors and patterns in music. The movie begins with an orchestra playing beautiful classical music while bright designs and geometric shapes dance across the screen. Wonderful! I appreciated most the more abstract elements in the film, however Walt also included hippo ballet dancers and Mickey as the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" later in the film. I was delighted!

So now when I go to a concert, I shut my eyes and let the designs and colors flow. Bass notes for me, become large shapes with dark cool colors. Treble notes seem smaller, sharp, and jagged with bright warm colors. Since my chosen medium is painting, I am limited to only two dimensions and music is four dimensions, including time. Sometimes I like to doodle while I listen, then try to overcome the limits of working two dimensionally by using shapes, colors, and rhythms in my design. Challenging and difficult and quite rewarding when I succeed.

Next time you have a chance to attend a concert, shut your eyes, and imagine with me and Walt what things you might see and where in space the music takes you.”

“I have no particular personal style but feel style and media should vary with the subject matter.  Most of my work is done with acrylic or watercolor paints.  However, I am open to exploring other media as well.  I paint in a semi-realistic manner but admire those abstract artists who can evoke a response from something unrecognizable.

I feel the artist has two important objectives to meet in each painting.  One is to convey a message or meaning and the other is to open the eyes of the viewer to the beauty that surrounds him, no matter where he is.  The artist should hope to renew the joy and curiosity felt by small children, which we seem to lose as we become jaded adults.

Open your eyes to the wonder of Eden."
October 1 thru November 30                                              Paula Kuehl, Taft Gallery

Paula Kuehl, of McHenry, has been painting since 1981. She started painting with oil paints, which were fun but slow to dry and would become muddy if you didn’t wait for them to dry. When she discovered pastels, she switched to them and never went back to oils. Pastels better suit her personality – she loves to draw, and pastels are like drawing with color. She also loves the vibrancy of the medium and the versatility it provides – versatility in the ability to use different types of paper and the way the pastel reacts on that paper. She feels her work is a study capturing the essence of life – whether it be in a child, a flower, or a landscape. Pastels are like life – vibrant and full of energy. That is what she attempts to capture in her works.
